Hello! I’m Jennifer
Licensed Professional Counselor and
Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor
After graduating from Michigan State University with a B.A. in Journalism – Go Spartans! – I worked in marketing and communications. After my two children were born, I focused on freelance writing for various publications, mostly focusing on military spouses and military family issues.
When I was 39, I went back to school for my M.A. in Counseling from the University of Texas – San Antonio. I worked for a variety of agencies, including a 24-hour crisis and detox center. I then decided to jump into the private practice world, and enjoyed my private-pay practice for more than five years. I am currently working in corporate America as a Mental Health Clinical Trainer and doing some freelance writing on the side.
I continue to live in San Antonio, Texas, and in my free time, I enjoy spending time with my family, running, and obsessing about my Boston Terrier, Kermit.

Compassion Fatigue. It’s Real, Y’all.
This past week, I got hit - and I mean, hit hard - by compassion fatigue. I didn’t recognize the signs at first but here they are, in no particular order: I wasn’t sleeping well. I was thinking about my clients round the clock. I was leaving as late as I could from...
Private Practice Chronicles, Part 14: Six Things I’ve Done Well
I started writing this “Private Practice Chronicles” series two years ago when I opened my practice. It was a way for me to write about the ups, downs and everything in-between. My chronicles of PP have been some of my most-read blogs, and it’s been fun for me to...
Why Your Therapist Needs Therapy
I rarely self-reveal to my clients during session, but a question I’ll always answer is this one: Do you see a therapist? Yes. Hells yes I do. I’m always more than baffled when I talk with a counseling colleague and I discover they are not seeing a therapist. If you...
Chronicles of Private Practice, Part 13: Why I Don’t Take Insurance
It’s usually the first question I am asked when a potential client calls or emails me. Do you take United/Aetna/Humana/BCBS/Tricare? No, no, no, no and no. And here’s why: Before opening my doors of my practice back in July of 2016, I struggled with this...
Hey Running World: Let’s Dial Down the Alcohol Runs
I run a lot, and I try and do at least 5-6 races per year – mostly ½ marathons, 10ks and 5ks. Over the course of my running career, I guesstimate I’ve participated in nearly 100 races. But lately, I’m getting more and more turned off at the running/race world. The...
Talking about Suicide
This morning our little community of Stone Oak in San Antonio, Texas was devastated by the news of an 8th grade boy who, last night, took his own life. I am a trauma-informed trained crisis counselor who works with many of the youth in our community. This one hits...
